Hungarian state takeover of public interest foundations

Initial reports highlighted the impact on the network established by historian Mária Schmidt, specifically the Foundation for Research of Central and Eastern European History and Society (KKeTTK). The liquidation of such foundations involves the state inheriting substantial assets, including museums, villas, and buildings. The KKeTTK’s assets were reported to be approximately 5.7 billion HUF in 2025.

Effective August 31, the state will assume the assets and responsibilities of several major organizations, including the Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC), the Batthyány Lajos Foundation, and the Blue Planet Climate Protection Foundation. Péter Magyar announced that while these entities may continue their work in different forms, they will lose their special legal status, state financing, and control over state-held assets. Financial data indicates the Batthyány Lajos Foundation received approximately 66 billion HUF between 2022 and 2026, and the Blue Planet Foundation received nearly 25 billion HUF during the same period. The MCC, which received over 130 billion HUF in 2020 alone, faces significant shifts in its operational stability.

The transition threatens international operations, such as the MCC Brussels institute, which head Frank Furedi noted may close in its current form if new funding is identified. Additionally, the Ministry of Education and Children has finalized new leadership appointments for university governing bodies, including the János Neumann University Foundation and the Széchenyi István University Foundation.
