Hungarian historian Iván Berend and director Tamás Fejér honored

The Hungarian cultural community marks the passing of two significant figures.

Historian Iván Berend has died at the age of 96 in Los Angeles. A former president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1985–1990) and a Kossuth Prize winner, Berend was a prominent figure in 20th-century international historiography. After surviving the Dachau concentration camp at age 14, he rose to become a professor and rector at Karl Marx University of Economic Sciences before moving to the United States in 1990. He served as a professor at UCLA and directed the Center for European and Eurasian Studies until his retirement in 2015.

Additionally, the legacy of film director Tamás Fejér is being commemorated twenty years after his death. Born in Pécs, Fejér was a pivotal figure in Hungarian television and film, known for directing the highly popular adventure series ‘A Tenkes kapitánya’ (1963), which was the first original television series produced by Hungarian Television. His body of work includes ‘Tüskevár’, ‘Bogáncs’, and the melodrama ‘Kertes házak utcája’, which was submitted to the Cannes Film Festival.
