Hungarian household foreign currency deposits hit record high

Hungarian households significantly increased their foreign currency deposits during the second quarter, reaching a historical peak of 2,714 billion forints by the end of June. According to data from the Magyar Nemzeti Bank, approximately 483 billion forints in new money flowed into foreign currency accounts over a three-month period.

While the strengthening forint reduced the value of existing holdings by nearly 200 billion forints, the net increase remains substantial. Analysts from Blochamps Capital suggest that savers are not merely seeking exchange rate gains but are using the current strength of the forint as an entry point to increase their foreign currency exposure. This trend is believed to be driven largely by high-net-worth individuals and private banking clients rather than seasonal holiday spending.
