Hungarian household securities holdings reach 33 trillion forints

Hungarian household assets held in securities have seen continuous monthly growth, reaching 33,054 billion forints in July 2026, a nearly 14 percent increase compared to the previous year. The primary investment vehicles used by citizens are government bonds (44.2 percent) and investment funds (43.6 percent), while stock market shares account for 10 percent of holdings.

In the pension sector, experts warn that demographic shifts over the next decade necessitate structural changes. While voluntary pension and health funds currently show favorable returns and growing assets, the aging membership and the high proportion of non-paying members pose long-term risks. Professional organizations suggest that increasing the number of savers through employer incentives, tax reform, or automatic enrollment may be required to support the aging population and provide long-term financing for Hungarian companies.
