Hungarian bond demand and household investment trends

Overview

Hungarian government bond markets and household investment trends continue to evolve. While foreign institutional investors previously increased holdings by approximately 4 trillion forints, retail demand has shown fluctuations. Despite a dip in the 38th week, the 39th week saw a recovery with residents purchasing 38.9 billion forints in bonds. By July 2026, household assets held in securities reached 33,054 billion forints, a nearly 14 percent year-on-year increase. Government bonds remain the primary vehicle at 44.2 percent, followed by investment funds at 43.6 percent, while stock market shares represent 10 percent of holdings. Experts continue to warn that demographic shifts and an aging membership in voluntary pension and health funds pose long-term risks, potentially requiring tax reforms or employer incentives. Recent data from the Hungarian State Debt Management Center (ÁKK) indicates strong auction demand in the third quarter. Gross issuances reached 15,936 billion forints, representing 78.1 percent of the updated annual gross issuance target of 20,414 billion forints. This updated financing plan follows a legislative proposal to increase the annual budget deficit and reserves related to European Union funds, raising the net financing requirement for the 2026 central budget from 5,445 billion to 7,110 billion forints. Market confidence remains evident through high auction demand and stable yield spreads. Treasury liquidity reached a record high of 5,500 billion forints in July and remained elevated through the end of the quarter. Notably, retail government bonds accounted for 77 percent of gross issuances within the three main financing pillars. In the broader credit market, August saw a seasonal decline in new mortgage contracts, totaling 211.7 billion forints, down from 254.9 billion in July. However, the total value of new mortgage contracts for the first eight months of the year reached 2,043 billion forints, breaking the previous annual record.
