Hungarian prosecutors raid Fidesz party's data centre

On 21 July 2026 Hungarian prosecutors from the Bács‑Kiskun County chief prosecutor’s office and investigators from the National Tax and Customs Administration conducted a raid on the data centre housing the Fidesz party’s servers in southern Hungary. The operation seized the party’s communications system and databases as part of a criminal investigation into the National Cultural Fund (NKA), where prosecutors suspect misuse of more than 17 billion forints (about $53 million) in grants awarded during Viktor Orbán’s tenure.

Fidesz called the raid “unprecedented since 1990” and described it as a politically motivated attack by the governing Tisza party led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, accusing the government of “tyranny” and “authoritarian rule.” The party’s communications director Bertalan Havasi said the investigators arrived without prior notice and intended to confiscate the entire communications system. The government rejected the political accusations, with Prime Minister Magyar posting on Facebook that he was waiting for a formal briefing from the prosecutors.

Six individuals, including former NKA vice‑president Balázs Bús and former MP Attila Ughy, have been detained in connection with the grant‑misuse case. The investigation is ongoing and further details have not been released.
