Hungarian prosecutors raid Fidesz data centre amid embezzlement probe
On 21 July 2026 prosecutors from the Bács‑Kiskun County chief prosecutor’s office and the national tax authority entered the data centre that hosts the servers of Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party in southern Hungary. Acting without prior notice, they seized the party’s entire communications system and database. Fidesz described the operation as “unprecedented since the end of Communism in 1990” and called it an act of “aggressive tyranny” by the ruling Tisza party led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar.
The raid is linked to a criminal investigation into the alleged misallocation of roughly 17 billion forints (about $53 million) from the National Cultural Fund (NKA) during the Orbán government. Six current and former officials have been charged with embezzlement and related offences; authorities declined to provide further details.
Fidesz vowed not to bow to political or legal pressure, accusing the new government of trying to “legally eliminate” the opposition. Prime Minister Magyar said he is awaiting formal information from the prosecutor’s office.
