Hungarian Ministry documents reveal Gripen flyover at 2014 stadium opening

Newly released documents from the Hungarian Ministry of Defence reveal that former Defense Minister Csaba Hende authorized a flyover of three JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets during the 2014 inauguration of the Groupama Aréna.

The documents, which the Ministry had previously withheld for thirty years citing national security concerns, show that the Hungarian General Staff received orders to organize the flyover for August 10, 2014, at 19:56. The purpose of the maneuver was to “increase the standard of the event.”

This disclosure contradicts previous explanations from 2014, when the Ministry claimed the flyover was part of a pre-planned military exercise that incurred no additional costs. The new records indicate the flight was a specific request following contact from the Ferencváros (FTC) football club, intended to promote the Hungarian Defense Forces' 21st-century airspace defense capabilities.
