Hungarian JAS 39 Gripen aircraft incidents and disclosures

Following an August 24 accident involving a JAS 39 Gripen fighter jet during paired exercises, Hungarian Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi announced that the aircraft’s black box has been transported to Sweden. Hungarian and Swedish specialists are examining the data to determine the cause of the malfunction.

While a suspension on Gripen training flights was initially implemented after the crash, Chief of Staff Zsolt Sándor has lifted the ban, noting that the fleet must continue to fulfill readiness duties. The pilot involved in the accident, who sustained a spinal injury during ejection, has been discharged from the hospital to recover at home. The city of Szolnok intends to award the pilots the title of ‘Distinguished of Szolnok’ for their efforts to avoid civilian infrastructure during the incident.

Separately, newly released Ministry of Defence documents have revealed that a flyover involving three Gripen jets was authorized for the 2014 inauguration of the Groupama Aréna. These records indicate the maneuver was a specific request following contact from the Ferencváros football club to “increase the standard of the event,” contradicting previous claims that the flight was part of a pre-planned military exercise.
