Hungarian MP Magyar Péter proposes term‑limit law for parliament

MP Magyar Péter argued that no rule should restrict how many times a politician can be elected to the Hungarian Parliament, calling any limit "absurd." He defended a government proposal to restrict the number of parliamentary terms a representative may serve, saying the measure had already been part of the ruling party’s election promises. In a parliamentary debate, fellow MP Hidvéghi Balázs asked Péter to compare the idea to limiting a dentist after a certain number of procedures, to which Péter responded that limiting politicians’ mandates is equally unreasonable. The discussion was echoed by Mi Hazánk party deputy chairman Pakusza Zoltán, who criticised the proposal as a threat to democracy and warned it could reduce public funding for other needs. Both politicians framed the debate as a question of democratic integrity versus political continuity.
