Hungarian Parliament Considers Constitutional Amendment Limiting Politicians’ Terms
The “Mindenki Magyarországa” movement and its associated party submitted their opinion on the proposed 17th amendment to Hungary’s Constitution. The amendment seeks to introduce term limits for members of parliament, potentially restrict the prime minister’s tenure to two terms, retire judges over 70, and remove the current president’s appointee.
Mayor Péter Magyar, a vocal supporter of the changes, argued that a true rule of law does not narrow the pool of political actors but should create transparent, fair conditions that let voters decide freely. He advocated for limiting the number of electoral cycles for list candidates, introducing a two‑round voting system, and keeping the electorate’s right to choose open. While supporting the government’s effort to curb “political entrenchment,” he warned against administrative tools that would restrict voters’ freedom. Submissions to the constitutional commission are due by Saturday, after which the proposals will be evaluated.
