Hungarian Parliament delays session due to heatwave, eyes extraordinary meeting to elect new president

The Hungarian Parliament’s plenary session scheduled for Wednesday was postponed because of extreme heat and an energy crisis, according to György Bálint, the parliament’s press chief. The delay also affects several committee meetings, including one set to investigate a pardon scandal.

Minister Ruff Bálint has proposed convening an extraordinary parliamentary session on August 10‑11 to address issues such as education, the national budget, the National Asset Recovery and Protection Agency, and to potentially vote on a new president. Former President Sulyok Tamás’s term ended on July 20, and the constitution requires a successor to be elected within a month. Prime Minister Magyar Péter has pledged that a new president will be in office by August 20, which would require the parliament to hold the election by August 12 at the latest. The extraordinary session is not yet on the formal agenda but is being pushed forward.
