Hungary drought and energy emergency
Entities: Hungary · HungaroMet Zrt. · Hungarian government · Hallerné Nagy Anikó · Ruff Bálint
Overview
In late July 2026 Hungary declared a national emergency as a severe agricultural drought drove soil moisture to critical levels, left the Danube at a historic low of 26 cm in Budapest, and forced the Paksi nuclear plant to cut output. The Environment Minister ordered the highest alert for water‑management agencies, while local authorities distributed water tanks to households relying on private wells.
Two days later the government cancelled an extraordinary parliamentary session slated for early August, citing the third‑degree heat alert, ongoing drought and an electricity shortage. The move was presented as part of broader energy‑saving measures, including turning off decorative lighting at state‑run institutions, to curb the emerging energy‑security crisis.
