By late August 2026, the crisis in Hungary intensified as approximately 99% of the nation’s land fell under severe or extreme drought conditions, threatening the Great Hungarian Plain with desertification.

Water levels in major bodies of water reached critical lows. The Danube River in Budapest dropped to 18 cm, paralyzing commercial navigation, while Lake Velence fell to roughly 20 cm—well below the optimal 150 cm for August—forcing the closure of tourist beaches. At Lake Velence, shorelines have receded hundreds of meters, leaving former tourist areas dry. The receding waters have revealed the ‘Famine Rock,’ a landmark that local legend says appears only during times of extreme drought and poor harvests.

The drought has caused significant economic and infrastructural damage, including reduced crop yields and drinking water shortages. Energy production remains severely impacted; the Paks nuclear power plant, which provides nearly half of the country’s electricity, saw production drop to approximately 25% of capacity due to insufficient water available for cooling.

By September 2026, officials warned of the long-term consequences of current water management. László Gajdos, the minister responsible for the living environment, stated that without changes to water management, “one million Hungarians could live in desert-like conditions within ten years.” He argued for a shift from current legislation, which focuses on flood protection and rapid drainage, toward water retention and conscious usage to combat climate change. Experts indicate that while climate change is a major driver, the crisis is exacerbated by historical practices of draining natural wetlands and channeling water away from the landscape.
