Hungarian Parliament adopts 100,000‑forint school‑start support and new media law

On 21 July 2026 the Hungarian Országgyűlés held an extraordinary two‑day session and voted on several bills. Deputies unanimously approved a law creating a 100 000‑forint school‑start allowance for families that receive the regular child‑protection benefit, receive a higher family‑allowance child, have a child with special‑education needs or enrolled in the Dobbantó programme, are single parents, or care for children in protective or orphanage services. The allowance is tax‑free and cannot be subject to enforcement.

In the same vote the parliament dissolved the Public Service Foundation and adopted the founding charter of the Independent Public Media Board, establishing the framework for a new public‑service media system. A separate proposal to create a national transport‑organising company and a state rolling‑stock management company was deferred.

Prime Minister Magyar Péter announced the passage on social media, saying the decision fulfilled a government promise. The school‑start support bill passed 139‑26‑1.
