Hungary to publish MPs' voting absences; Lázár János most absent
Parliament speaker Forsthoffer Ágnes announced that the Hungarian Országgyűlés will host a searchable, user‑friendly database showing how often members missed votes. The move follows four May plenary sessions in which a number of MPs were repeatedly absent, prompting discussion of possible financial sanctions. Under current rules, a member who skips at least a quarter of votes without justified reason can have part of their honorarium reduced.
Forsthoffer said the moral compass has "broken" ("elromott az erkölcsi iránytű") and that transparency is needed to restore public trust. She noted that the party with the highest absentee rate submitted explanations and treated the absences as justified, so no honorarium cuts were imposed for May. Seventeen MPs missed more than a quarter of votes, thirteen of them from the governing Fidesz‑KDNP bloc. Lázár János leads the absentee list, having missed about 73‑74 % of votes, followed by Budai Gyula, Szijjártó Péter, Németh Zsolt and Hankó Balázs. The database became publicly available in June 2026, and Forsthoffer indicated future justified absences will be limited to health reasons or official parliamentary or governmental missions.
