Hungarian Parliament launches probe into MNB fund misuse
A Hungarian parliamentary investigative committee has commenced its work to examine alleged financial irregularities and the misuse of public funds involving the Hungarian National Bank (MNB). Led by Attila Csőszi of the Tisza Party, the committee's primary objective is to trace the movement of hundreds of billions of forints and determine political and institutional responsibility.
The investigation will focus on several key areas: the management of assets within MNB-linked foundations, the investment structures of the Optima Group, and various real estate projects, including the renovation of the central bank's headquarters. Specific concerns have been raised regarding the Neumann János University Foundation in Kecskemét and the significant increase in costs for the MNB headquarters renovation, which reportedly rose from 55 billion to 105 billion forints.
Committee leadership indicated that former central bank governor György Matolcsy and his son, Ádám Matolcsy, may be called for hearings. While the committee is not a judicial body, it aims to identify those who benefited from these financial structures and will ultimately propose legislative and supervisory measures to ensure greater transparency and accountability in the management of central bank public funds.
