Hungarian PM Péter Magyar proposes “Magyar recipe” to curb Europe’s far‑right surge

Prime Minister Péter Magyar of Hungary, after winning the election, has repeatedly told foreign press that societies must first understand why parties such as France’s Rassemblement National, Germany’s AfD and Austria’s FPÖ are gaining support. He argues mainstream parties have drifted from everyday language and concerns, and that politicians should listen to voters, take their anxieties seriously and offer concrete policy answers.

Magyar points to his own nationwide outreach – visiting almost 700 towns and meeting hundreds of thousands of citizens – as the model for this approach. He warns that stigmatizing far‑right voters or dismissing their worries as merely racist undermines democratic dialogue. Instead, he suggests material responses to cultural, resource‑related and security concerns. He also notes that protests against the AfD, such as the demonstration in Erfurt, are largely symbolic and unlikely to sway voters.

The “Magyar recipe” therefore emphasizes direct engagement, attentive listening and pragmatic solutions rather than rhetorical condemnation of populist movements.
