Hungarian PM Peter Magyar moves to dismiss President Tamás Sulyok
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced that the National Assembly will vote on Monday on the 17th amendment to the Fundamental Law. The amendment would end the term of incumbent President Tamás Sulyok unless he signs the change within five days, after which Parliament can initiate a dismissal procedure.
Magyar has also accused Sulyok of abusing public funds on recent trips to the United Kingdom and the United States, citing the use of a government jet and the presence of the president’s son and wife on the journeys. The accusations were posted on Magyar’s Facebook account and echoed in statements from the government’s communication office.
The amendment is part of Magyar’s broader “Operation Pure Fire” programme, which includes a full constitutional revision, anti‑corruption measures such as a new National Asset Recovery Office, Hungary’s accession to the EU’s European Public Prosecutor’s Office, and a restructuring of public media. Opposition parties and legal experts warn that the move threatens Hungary’s rule‑of‑law foundations.
