Hungarian Prosecutor Delays Request to Suspend MP Peter Magyar's Immunity
Nearly two months after the newly elected Hungarian parliament convened, the chief prosecutor has not yet submitted a request to suspend MP Peter Magyar's parliamentary immunity in the phone‑theft case. Under Hungarian law, the prosecutor’s request would be forwarded by the speaker to the immunity committee, which must hear the member and then advise parliament; a two‑thirds majority is required to suspend the immunity.
Magyar, leader of the Tisza Party, has repeatedly called for the abolition of parliamentary immunity, saying it should be eliminated. The delay also affects the pending case of fellow Tisza MP Lőrinc Mihály Varga, whose own immunity suspension has not been scheduled.
The issue remains pending in the parliament, with no clear timetable for the committee’s deliberation or a vote.
