Hungarian public broadcaster MTVA overhauls M1 channel and silences presenter statements

Hungarian public broadcaster MTVA is implementing a sweeping restructuring of its flagship channel M1. The changes include a new programming schedule that will feature thematic weekend blocks of classic Hungarian films and popular series, with the first weekend spotlighting works by female directors such as Ildikó Enyedi and Márta Mészáros. Weekday evenings will also see a reshuffle of series and music concert repeats.

At the same time, the broadcaster has halted on‑air statements from presenters. Host Ernő Zsolt Kiss, who leads the entertainment quiz "Magyarország, szeretlek!", had his interview blocked after the media department cited lack of prior permission, reflecting a broader ban on staff speaking to the press. The leadership and branding of the public media are also undergoing major changes, leaving the fate of several popular shows uncertain.
