Hungarian researchers receive major international honors in mathematics and physics
Hungarian researchers from the HUN-REN network have achieved significant international recognition in the fields of mathematics and physics.
Miklós Abért and Gábor Pete from the HUN-REN Rényi Alfréd Mathematical Research Institute will join a prestigious Simons Foundation collaboration starting in January 2027. The four-year program, led by Yale University mathematician Yair Minsky, focuses on the discrete subgroups of Lie groups. This international initiative involves 16 lead researchers from institutions such as Princeton University, the University of Chicago, and the Max Planck Institute.
In the field of physics, Miklós Tegze, Gábor Bortel, and Gyula Faigel have been awarded the 2027 Gregori Aminoff Award by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Recognized for their breakthroughs in crystallography, the researchers developed a method using a single 25-femtosecond X-ray pulse to determine the three-dimensional crystal structure of a material. This technique, based on Kossel-line crystallography, offers significantly higher speed and efficiency than previous methods that required multiple measurements from various angles.
