Hungarian ruling party Fidesz faces accelerating split amid 'Operation Očistec

Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced on Facebook that the breakup of the former governing party Fidesz is speeding up. He said the party’s “puppets” that once acted enthusiastically are now “throwing the towel in the ring” one by one. The statement coincided with a wave of resignations: General Prosecutor Gábor Bálint Nagy said he will step down on 25 August, and Gergely Gulyás declared he will leave his post as head of the Fidesz parliamentary faction. President Tamás Sulyok signed a 17th constitutional amendment that terminates his own mandate, while Magyar warned he could bring a constitutional lawsuit if the amendment is not signed within five days. These developments are part of what the premier calls “Operation Očistec,” a purge aimed at reshaping the party and limiting the influence of Viktor Orbán’s regime.
