Hungarian speaker Forsthoffer urged to seek chief prosecutor's removal

Lawyers Horváth Lóránt and Laczó Adrienn sent a formal letter to Ágnes Forsthoffer, speaker of the Hungarian Parliament and acting head of state, requesting that she initiate procedures to dismiss Chief Prosecutor Nagy Gábor Bálint. The letter lists five allegations, including the prosecutor’s alleged role in the “Ukrainian money convoy” case, unlawful actions in that investigation, and the handling of defamation claims involving former officials Semjén Zsolt and Gulyás Gergely. The authors argue that the prosecutor’s office gave undue procedural advantage to government‑aligned politicians and that the deputy chief prosecutor position has remained vacant, impairing the office’s lawful operation.

The request cites the recent constitutional amendment signed by former President Sulyok, which ended his presidential mandate and placed the speaker in the acting presidential role, giving her the authority to forward the dismissal proposal to the Parliament. If the Parliament approves, it could remove Nagy from office for “failure to fulfil duties or conduct a crime proven by a final judgment.”
