Hungarian State Treasury hit by major cyberattack

The Hungarian State Treasury (MÁK) has suffered a major cyberattack, with hackers reportedly accessing sensitive databases related to pensions, family support, and agricultural subsidies. The attack, which appears to have originated from Russian servers, targeted central databases that were allegedly protected by outdated and weak passwords.

Cybersecurity experts have described the incident as an “IT disgrace,” noting that the breach may have compromised critical data including service history, income, and contribution records used to determine pension eligibility. The Hungarian State Audit Office had previously warned in 2019 about vulnerabilities in the IT systems inherited from the National Pension Insurance Directorate.

The National Cyber Security Institute (NKI) is currently conducting a full investigation alongside Treasury specialists to manage damage control. The incident has also been reported to the National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (NAIH). Currently, the Treasury's IT systems are reported to be operating under limited capacity.
