Hungarian Theatre Association submits major reform proposal to officials
The Hungarian Theatre Association (MSZT) has presented a comprehensive professional proposal package to decision-makers, including State Secretary Ervin Nagy and Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony. Developed by 17 working groups and over 200 professionals, the document contains more than 500 specific suggestions aimed at reforming the performing arts sector.
Johanna Bodor, President of the MSZT, stated that the extensive material—comprising a 65-page concept and nearly 200 pages of detailed proposals—could serve as the foundation for a new performing arts law. The package addresses critical issues such as financing, professional career paths, ethical regulations, and the status of independent theatres.
During the forum held at the Budapest Puppet Theatre, State Secretary Ervin Nagy addressed the ongoing issues of harassment and abuse of power within the industry. He acknowledged that political leadership had previously failed to prioritize these matters, often resorting to reactive measures rather than long-term solutions. He emphasized the need for a new framework to ensure a safe creative environment.
Mayor Gergely Karácsony highlighted the importance of supporting Budapest’s diverse theatrical landscape and noted that improved structural distribution of cultural resources could lead to a new era for the arts.
