Hungarian theatrical systemic reform disputes

Overview

The Hungarian theatrical industry remains divided over systemic reforms and political influence. The Hungarian Theatre Society (Magyar Teátrumi Társaság) has called for an end to “political stigmatization” and rhetoric that views the industry’s last sixteen years through a single political lens. While the Society supports professional audits, it argues these should not be used as political tools or to focus exclusively on specific theaters. President Attila Vidnyánszky further noted that the Society was excluded from recent consultations regarding restructuring, despite previous offers to participate in professional debates.

In a separate effort to shape the sector, the Hungarian Theatre Association (MSZT) has submitted a major reform proposal to officials, including State Secretary Ervin Nagy and Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony. Developed by 17 working groups and over 200 professionals, the package includes more than 500 suggestions regarding financing, career paths, and the status of independent theaters. MSZT President Johanna Bodor suggested the document could serve as a foundation for a new performing arts law.

During discussions at the Budapest Puppet Theatre, State Secretary Ervin Nagy addressed industry issues such as harassment and abuse of power, acknowledging that previous political leadership had often failed to prioritize long-term solutions for a safe creative environment. Meanwhile, the University of Theatre and Film Arts (SZFE) continues to defend its senate proceedings and foundation appointments against claims of political maneuvering, characterizing such accusations as attempts to “misrepresent a standard procedure.”
