Hungarian white stork dies in Somalia after unusual migration
A young white stork, identified by the tag UK43, has died in the Puntland region of Somalia after completing an unusual migration from Hungary. The bird was originally banded on June 10 near Szécsény, Hungary, by Ferenc Papp of the Bükki National Park Directorate.
Unlike most Hungarian storks that migrate via the Sinai Peninsula and the Nile Valley, UK43 followed a different route. Tracking data showed the bird traveled along the Red Sea coast of the Arabian Peninsula, crossed near the southern tip of Yemen, and entered the Horn of Africa.
The stork's body was discovered in a dried riverbed in the Dhuudo area of Puntland. While there were initial concerns regarding foul play, the Puntland Ministry of Environment, Range and Climate Change reported that no signs of injury were found on the bird. Authorities believe the death was likely caused by extreme heat, exhaustion, or the severe drought affecting the region. The event has drawn significant attention from local Somali media and environmental officials, serving as a platform to highlight the importance of protecting migratory birds.
