White stork migration mortality and route shifts

Overview

Recent tracking data reveals significant mortality and unusual migratory patterns among white storks. In Europe, researchers from the Bornheim Stork Center reported that 10 out of 150 tracked birds from Rhineland-Palatinate died during migration, with electrocution identified as the most frequent cause of death.

In a separate instance, a young stork tagged in Hungary (UK43) completed an atypical migration route along the Red Sea coast and the Arabian Peninsula before dying in the Puntland region of Somalia. Local authorities in Somalia found no signs of injury on the bird, suggesting the death was likely due to extreme heat, exhaustion, or severe drought in the region.
