Hungary adopts sustainable water management action plan

The Hungarian government has adopted a Sustainable Water Management Action Plan aimed at creating a resilient framework to combat the effects of climate change. The plan, published in the Magyar Közlöny, outlines specific measures, responsibilities, and timelines to coordinate water usage with available resources and climate forecasts.

A key component of the initiative involves utilizing European Union funds available through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The strategy marks a shift from historical practices; while 19th-century policies focused on draining wetlands to increase agricultural land—resulting in the loss of 90% of Hungary’s natural water habitats—the new plan prioritizes retaining water within the landscape.

Implementation will involve coordination between several ministries, including those responsible for the living environment, agriculture and food, rural and settlement development, and economy and energy. Tasks include accelerating the creation of water catchment management plans and strengthening local cooperation to better manage flood and drought risks.
