Hungarian environmental and resource management initiatives

The Hungarian government has introduced several environmental initiatives focused on climate resilience and resource management.

In late August, the government adopted a Sustainable Water Management Action Plan to combat climate change effects. Utilizing European Union funds from the Recovery and Resilience Facility, the plan seeks to prioritize water retention within the landscape, marking a departure from historical policies that focused on draining wetlands. The strategy involves multi-ministry coordination to manage flood and drought risks through new water catchment management plans.

By early September, the government expanded its environmental agenda by announcing a national afforestation program scheduled through 2030. This initiative includes planting drought-resistant tree species and creating green corridors, supported by non-refundable subsidies. Additionally, officials announced plans to reform the national waste management system to better meet European Union recycling targets and reduce landfill use, aiming to improve service quality and decrease annual public expenditures.
