Hungary extends use of old identity cards for specific services

Following a decision by the Hungarian Parliament, old book-format identity cards that expired on August 3 can still be used for specific administrative purposes until the end of the year. These documents were deemed invalid because they do not meet unified European Union security standards.

The Ministry of Interior stated that the old IDs remain acceptable for receiving pensions and social, monetary, or child protection benefits from the Hungarian State Treasury, accessing healthcare services, validating public service travel discounts, and during registry procedures. However, they are no longer valid for any other non-state administrative tasks.

Since the replacement process began in June, over 100,000 people have updated their documents, leaving approximately 57,000 old cards in circulation. Citizens can apply for new IDs at any government window, with or without an appointment. Issuance is free for citizens over the age of 70.
