Hungary and Austria agree on infrastructure upgrades and asbestos clean‑up during Vienna talks

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar met Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker in Vienna, where the two leaders pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation. They announced plans for joint government meetings, the first to be held in September at the Grassalkovich Castle in Gödöllő.

Key points of the agenda included extending the Győr‑Sopron motorway to the Austrian town of Eisenstadt and accelerating upgrades to the Budapest‑Vienna railway line. Both sides also discussed removing recurring border checks to ease commuting for tens of thousands of workers.

A joint Hungarian‑Austrian commission will investigate severe asbestos contamination in western Hungary, where air levels have been reported to exceed legal limits by up to three hundred times. The discussion emphasized transparency, the closure of contaminated mines, and preventing further distribution of asbestos‑tainted material.

Magyar reiterated Hungary’s commitment to EU principles, anti‑corruption measures, and the retrieval of EU funding, while stressing that differences on other issues would not hinder overall collaboration.
