Hungary‑Austria asbestos contamination expands
Entities: Hungarian government · Szombathely · Bozsok · Christian Stocker · Peter Magyar
Overview
Since May 2026 Hungary and Austria have coordinated to halt shipments of asbestos‑laden stone, launch joint investigations, and begin road‑remediation in western Hungary. NGOs mapped contaminated tourist trails in June and emergency measures were implemented in Szombathely. By mid‑July, asbestos was confirmed at dozens of additional sites, prompting speed limits, entry bans and temporary dust‑suppression treatments while full sealing plans await approval.
On 26 July the Hungarian government announced a dedicated 3 billion‑forint (≈ 8 million USD) cleanup fund to support affected municipalities. The fund will finance the removal of contaminated material, including the 12‑kilometre stretch in Szombathely’s Oladi Plató district approved earlier. A joint Hungarian‑Austrian commission of health, environmental and legal experts was established, and both leaders affirmed that the polluter‑pays principle will apply, with Austria expected to reimburse remediation costs. More than 650 inspections have been launched, six exceeding health limits, underscoring the continued expansion of the remediation effort.
