Péter Magyar and Volodymyr Zelenskyy meet to reset Hungary-Ukraine relations

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a bilateral meeting at an EU summit in Brussels to reset relations between their two nations. The meeting follows years of diplomatic tension, primarily regarding the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region and Hungary’s previous opposition to Ukraine’s EU accession.

A significant breakthrough was noted following the Ukrainian parliament’s adoption of a law expanding educational rights for national minorities, which Magyar described as a first step toward restoring mutual trust. Additionally, the Ukrainian parliament recognized crimes committed against the Hungarian population in Zakarpattia between 1944 and 1946.

The leaders agreed to establish new foundations for political and economic relations and will continue negotiations at the ministerial level. While Magyar expressed full solidarity with Ukraine against Russian aggression and offered diplomatic support for a ceasefire, he maintained that Hungary will not provide weapons to Ukraine. Future discussions may involve reciprocal visits between Kyiv and Budapest, or meetings in Beregszász.
