Hungary and Ukraine face diplomatic tension over C8 initiative and EU bid
Diplomatic relations between Hungary and Ukraine have faced significant strain following disputes over the newly formed Carpathian Eight (C8) regional cooperation initiative. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar claimed the country was included in the framework without prior consultation, leading to a public disagreement with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. While Sybiha accused the Hungarian government of continuing isolationist policies, Hungarian officials have since engaged in direct dialogue to resolve the impasse, with Foreign Minister Anita Orbán suggesting Hungary may join the group in the future.
Further tension arose from a leaked agreement between the Hungarian energy group MOL and Ukraine’s Naftogaz concerning the construction of oil storage facilities on the Hungarian side of the border. Additionally, Hungary remains the sole EU member state blocking the opening of four negotiation clusters essential for Ukraine’s EU accession, citing unresolved concerns regarding the rights of the Hungarian national minority in Ukraine.
The C8 initiative, which aims to strengthen regional security, energy, and trade among Ukraine and its neighbors, remains a focal point of these bilateral tensions.
