Hungary and Ukraine face renewed diplomatic tensions

Relations between Hungary and Ukraine have entered a new period of tension under Prime Minister Péter Magyar, despite initial expectations of a diplomatic reset following the era of Viktor Orbán.

Key points of contention include the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine and the status of the Carpathian Eight regional forum. While Kyiv presented Hungary as a member of this new security and energy cooperation framework, Budapest clarified that its representative was merely an observer and that the country never formally consented to membership.

Energy infrastructure has also become a flashpoint. Although the Ukrainian state company Naftogaz and the Hungarian firm MOL signed a memorandum to explore storing Ukrainian oil and gas products in Hungary, Prime Minister Magyar has rejected the proposal on security and political grounds, insisting that MOL should have consulted the Hungarian government first.

Furthermore, Hungary has renewed its blockade on Ukraine’s EU accession progress, demanding that Kyiv take additional steps to implement previously agreed-upon measures regarding minority rights before new negotiation clusters can be opened.
