Hungary announces diesel compensation for vehicle owners
The Hungarian government has announced a targeted diesel compensation scheme to assist approximately one million vehicle owners facing rising fuel costs. Under the plan, owners of diesel vehicles with up to 150 horsepower can receive a total of 20,000 HUF in support through December, with the first installment arriving in October. The compensation is designed to offset the roughly 5,000 HUF difference between previous protected prices and current market rates per tanking. The support also extends to individual entrepreneurs and primary producers if the vehicle is registered in their name.
To facilitate payments, the Hungarian State Treasury will automatically transfer funds to the bank account used for vehicle tax payments via the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) database. The government opted for this targeted approach rather than reintroducing a universal protected fuel price to avoid supply disruptions.
Oil company MOL has expressed support for the targeted compensation but warned that reintroducing a protected price could trigger immediate diesel and gasoline shortages within days by displacing fuel imports. MOL cited global supply pressures, including conflicts in the Strait of Hormuz and Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, which have contributed to a 21% drop in global diesel exports since the start of the year. Additionally, transport sectors, including freight haulers, have expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that the current measures exclude many professional transporters who face significant rising costs.
