Hungary announces diesel fuel subsidy payments
The Hungarian government is implementing a diesel fuel subsidy to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices. Eligible vehicle owners will receive a total of 20,000 HUF, distributed in four installments of 5,000 HUF each.
To qualify, individuals must have been the owner or operator of a diesel-powered passenger car with an engine power of no more than 110 kW (approximately 150 horsepower) as of January 1, 2026. The subsidy is limited to one vehicle per person, even if the owner possesses multiple qualifying cars. Individual entrepreneurs and farmers may also be eligible if the vehicle is registered in their name as a private passenger car.
The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) will automatically identify eligible recipients using official vehicle registration databases. No separate application or bank account registration is required. Payments will be disbursed by the Hungarian State Treasury to the bank account on file used for vehicle tax payments, or to other accounts known to the NAV. If no account is available, the funds will be delivered via postal mail.
The installment schedule is set for September 30, October 30, November 13, and December 7, 2026.
