Hungary introduces automatic diesel fuel subsidy for motorists

The Hungarian government has introduced a diesel fuel subsidy program to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices. Eligible private individuals using diesel passenger cars with a maximum power of 110 kilowatts (approximately 150 horsepower) will receive a total of 20,000 HUF by the end of the year.

The support will be distributed in four installments by the Hungarian State Treasury on September 30, October 30, November 13, and December 7. The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) will use vehicle registration data to facilitate the process automatically. Recipients do not need to apply; funds will be transferred to bank accounts held at the tax office, or sent via postal money order if no account is available.

The program aims to assist nearly one million motorists, though critics have noted that the power limit may exclude some common family vehicles that slightly exceed the 150 horsepower threshold. The Hungarian Parliament approved the measure with 123 votes in favor and 32 against.
