Hungary announces rail freight subsidy restart amid train disruptions

Hungary is set to restart subsidies for single-wagon rail freight to increase competitiveness and reduce road congestion. Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy announced that the government approved a proposal to support single-wagon transport, a program previously halted by János Lázár. The initiative aims to keep smaller volumes of goods on rails rather than shifting them to trucks, potentially reducing CO2 emissions and heavy vehicle traffic.

Separately, significant rail disruptions occurred across Hungary. In Győr, a collision between a freight train and a logistics company locomotive caused delays on the main line. In the Szeged region, technical failures with a freight train led to service suspensions between Szeged and Szatymaz, as well as on the Békéscsaba-Szeged line, necessitating the use of replacement buses for passengers.
