Hungary creates National Asset Recovery Office and unveils online MP registry
The Hungarian Parliament approved a law establishing the National Asset Recovery and Protection Office (NVVH) with a vote of 143‑46. The agency is tasked with investigating illegal dispossession of public assets, facilitating the return of misappropriated wealth, and preventing future abuses. It will operate autonomously, report to Parliament, and may initiate legal actions against identified cases. Public reaction is divided, with many praising the anti‑corruption move while opponents liken the office to historic authoritarian institutions.
Separately, the National Election Office (NVI) launched a continuously updated online registry of active members of the Hungarian Parliament on the valasztas.hu website. The searchable database lists MPs alphabetically or by party, includes information on resignations and replacements, and also displays candidate lists. The NVI plans to extend the service to European Parliament members and, later, to local government officials.
