Hungary culls 3,000 pigs after first African swine fever outbreak

Hungarian authorities confirmed the first case of African swine fever in domestic pigs on a farm in the village of Vallaj, Szabolcs‑Szatmar‑Bereg county. The National Food Chain Safety Office ordered the culling of roughly 3,000 pigs and established a protection and surveillance zone while an epidemiological investigation seeks the source and assesses any further spread. The outbreak threatens Hungary’s pork sector, which held about 2.9 million pigs at the end of 2025, and could impact regional meat markets.

Romania’s interim minister of agriculture, Tanczos Barna, said his ministry is monitoring the situation and has consulted with the head of the National Authority for Veterinary and Food Safety (ANSVSA) to prepare firm preventive measures, aiming to limit any risk of the disease entering Romania’s pig industry.
