Hungary energy outlook: Nuclear role and rising electricity imports
Attila Ságodi, CEO of Paks II. Zrt., stated at the Portfolio Energy Investment Forum 2026 that nuclear and renewable energies are complementary technologies essential for meeting the rising energy demands of electrification and data centers. He emphasized that Europe must develop its internal capacities for manufacturing power plants and energy equipment to ensure energy sovereignty, noting a growing interest in nuclear power across countries like Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and Romania.
Separately, data regarding Hungary's energy situation in August 2026 indicates a significant increase in electricity imports. Due to high summer heat and production losses at major domestic plants, the net electricity import share rose from 12.5 percent to 27.1 percent compared to the previous year. This represents a 134 percent increase in volume, totaling an additional 630 GWh. The surge in imports was particularly acute during evening hours when solar production declined while consumption remained high due to heat.
