Hungary enforces strict fines for illegal forest resource collection
In Hungary, collecting materials from forests is subject to strict regulations, and unauthorized gathering can result in fines ranging from 50,000 to 500,000 HUF. Because trees and forest resources are state or forest manager property, taking even fallen branches without a permit is legally classified as theft.
Key restrictions include:
• Firewood: Collecting fallen branches or cutting wood requires explicit permission from forest managers or an official transport permit. There is an annual limit of 20 cubic meters for residential use.
• Flora and Seeds: Collecting moss, acorns, or pine cones is prohibited without permission. Acorns, in particular, are strictly regulated as they serve as vital forest propagation material. In protected areas, additional environmental authority permits are required.
• Vegetation: It is illegal to break branches from living trees or shrubs. Even gathering fallen wood is considered unauthorized use of resources unless specific conditions are met, such as collecting leftover material from a completed logging site, which may still require payment for transport.
