Hungary extends Babaváró loan deadline and student loan interest freeze
The Hungarian government announced new regulations that extend financial relief measures for families and students. For Babaváró parenting loans, the deadline to meet the five‑year child‑birth condition has been pushed to the end of October 2026 (for contracts whose original deadline fell between 1 July 2024 and 31 Oct 2026). The decree also prolongs the interest‑freeze on free‑use student loans (Diákhitel 1) until 31 December 2026, keeping the rate at 7.99 %. The National Bank of Hungary estimates that about 24,700 Babaváró contracts – roughly 182 billion forints – have not yet resulted in a child, with 43 billion forints of that volume classified as highly vulnerable. The extensions aim to prevent families from falling into a debt trap and to give students certainty over loan repayments.
These measures were published in the Hungarian Gazette and are part of a broader effort to make loan conditions more lenient amid ongoing economic pressures.
