Greenpeace launches interactive asbestos contamination map in Hungary

Greenpeace has introduced an interactive online map that lets residents report suspected asbestos‑contaminated sites in Hungary, Austria and other countries. The platform displays locations already documented by the NGO and authorities as polluted or cleaned up, and is updated with photo or laboratory evidence submitted by the public.

The organization says the Hungarian government has yet to publish a national asbestos‑remediation plan or clear guidance for local authorities. It has filed a public‑interest data request to learn the decisions, reports and membership of the Hungarian‑Austrian asbestos working groups and the regional asbestos task force. Greenpeace warns that, without uniform guidelines, some municipalities are using temporary measures—such as calcium‑chloride treatments or road resurfacing—that could increase long‑term health risks. It urges rapid, professional removal of asbestos‑containing rock, proper disposal and, where possible, returning material to original mines. The government has not responded to Greenpeace’s request for information.
