Hungary faces disputes over sports funding and leadership rules

Political tension is rising in Hungary regarding the management of sports funding and the leadership of sports organizations. The Jobbik party has called for an immediate investigation and repayment of funds following a dispute involving approximately 55 billion forints in accounting irregularities at the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ). Jobbik is demanding that any irregularly accounted public money, including TAO tax subsidies, be returned to the state budget with interest, arguing against any backroom deals.

Simultaneously, Péter Magyar has proposed new strict conflict-of-interest regulations. These rules would prohibit politicians and certain state leaders from heading sports federations or organizations with more than 500 registered athletes. If passed, the law would require current leaders such as Gábor Kubatov (Ferencváros) and Péter Szijjártó (Honvéd) to vacate their positions. The proposed ban would remain in effect for four years after a person leaves their political office.
