Hungarian sports governance and funding disputes

The Hungarian government has proposed new conflict of interest regulations targeting the sports sector. The proposed rules would prohibit ministers, state secretaries, members of the Hungarian and EU parliaments, and party leaders from holding leadership positions in sports organizations with more than 500 registered athletes. This restriction would apply for four years after an individual leaves political office.

These proposals have met with resistance from figures such as Gábor Kubatov, who has expressed defiance regarding the potential laws. The situation has expanded to include broader political disputes over sports funding. The Jobbik party has called for an investigation and the repayment of approximately 55 billion forints following reported accounting irregularities at the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ). Jobbik is demanding that irregularly accounted public money, including TAO tax subsidies, be returned to the state budget with interest.

If the conflict-of-interest regulations are enacted, current leaders such as Gábor Kubatov and Péter Szijjártó would be required to vacate their respective positions.
