Hungary braces for intensified heatwaves as super El Niño looms

Hungarian climate monitors report that summer heatwaves are becoming longer, hotter and more frequent, with projections of over 40 hot‑weather days per year by the end of the century. The nation also faces a shift toward longer dry spells punctuated by heavier rainstorms, raising the risk of summer droughts despite overall higher precipitation.

At the same time, scientists warn of an unprecedented “hyper” El Niño developing in the Pacific, with sea‑surface temperatures 3‑5 °C above the long‑term average. Forecasts suggest a very rainy autumn and winter for much of Europe, potentially bringing 20‑30 % more precipitation to the Carpathian Basin and increasing flood hazards. Global agencies estimate an 80 % chance of an El Niño episode this summer, which could lift worldwide average temperatures.

Researchers have floated a geo‑engineering concept—marine cloud brightening—to reflect more sunlight and temper the forthcoming super El Niño, but they stress that the approach is experimental and raises ethical and political concerns.
