Hungary faces scrutiny over enforcement abuses and political threats

During a parliamentary committee hearing, legal experts and officials addressed systemic issues regarding enforcement and institutional accountability in Hungary. Legal expert Péter Hack testified that the profit-oriented structure of the enforcement system led to abuses, as practitioners prioritized personal gain over legal integrity. He noted a lack of external oversight and mechanisms to protect vulnerable debtors, suggesting that the regulatory environment allowed for unregulated, predatory practices.

Separately, political tensions have escalated following statements by Viktor Orbán regarding the newly established National Asset Recovery and Protection Office (NVVH). Orbán indicated that individuals working within the institution would be held financially and legally accountable once his party returns to power, promising to make their identities public. This has led to legal challenges, including a report filed with the Chief Prosecutor's Office alleging preparation of official violence against a person.
