Hungary faces severe drought and receding water levels

Hungary is experiencing an unprecedented drought driven by prolonged dry periods and extreme temperatures. The receding water levels have significantly impacted the country’s lakes and rivers, leaving behind parched landscapes and cracked earth.

Lake Velence has seen water levels drop to exceptionally low points, with shorelines receding hundreds of meters and leaving former tourist areas dry. The Danube river is also facing low water levels, which complicates navigation and agriculture. The receding waters have revealed the “Famine Rock,” a landmark that local legend says appears only during times of extreme drought and poor harvests.

Agricultural sectors are reporting damaged crops and water shortages. Experts warn that despite its traditional reputation for water abundance, Hungary is becoming increasingly vulnerable to extreme weather and extended dry spells.
